About Helen
I am a spiritual director, a retreat leader and a writer. In more than fifteen years as a spiritual director my goal is to provide safe, hospital space for people to explore their faith stories.
As an instructor at the Center for Spiritual Direction, North Park Theological Seminary, I teach and supervise students who are being trained in spiritual direction practice. As part of my work at the Center, I teach on-line courses in journaling and spiritual direction practice.
I lead church retreats and workshops focused on spiritual practices, as well as retreats designed specifically for pastors. I teach seminary students and meet with them for personal spiritual direction.
My devotional article, “The Dead are Still with Us” published in the Covenant Companion, September, 2004 received a special merit award from the Religious Press Association. I am the author of Journaling as a Spiritual Practice: Encountering God through Attentive Writing, published by InterVarsity Press in 2008. The book received a starred review in Publishers Weekly, July, 2008.
I live in Alaska with my husband, Max, and have three adult children.
